Rasputina: Cabin Fever! (2002)
by Ophelia
from Vanguard Party 2.1 (October 2002)
Who can rock a cello harder than the girls of Rasputina?
No one that I can think of. Their album Cabin Fever! can attest
to that. For some songs you can’t even tell that there are cellos,
“State Fair” and “Antique High Heel Red Doll Shoes”
are some of the songs that make the fact that they are playing cellos
fade away, because the noise emanating from these instruments is very
uncello-like. The synthesizers make the cellos sound so intensely like
nothing I have ever heard before. These noises can put guitars
to shame.
I am also in awe of the savvy lyrics that
can make the killing of a deer seem sexy. The lyrics make me want to
go out and buy a corset and a few garters myself. Sometimes I am struck
by the strangeness of the lyrics: “They had rats as big as ponies
there. They asked the Pope to declare them fish.” Who else can
write lyrics like this and get away with it?
The album as a whole, written by Melora Creager,
who is convinced that she was raised in a an orphanage in the 1800’s,
is one of the best, strangest and sexiest things to ever invade my ears.
